A few words about the Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN)
The Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) was formed in 1990 with a modest goal to promote an inclusive, liberative, and progressive understanding of Islam. AMAN is committed to addressing issues that are affecting the people and the natural world in collaboration with other faith-based organizations and the people’s movements. To achieve this noble goal, it is also essential to nurture the inter-religious, interethnic, inter-cultural, inter-gender understanding, cooperation and solidarity at community, national and global levels. Towards that end, AMAN has been engaged in human resource development through various courses, network building programs, and discussion forums to discuss and analyze obstacles and evolve strategies.
Challenges faced by the Muslim World
It is important to understand that civil societies and faith-based organizations cannot take along this goal alone. National and global governance are two major factors in formulating and executing national and international policies and actions. Existing policies and practices are failing to right the wrongs and to set the agenda of empowering people and let them set the priorities for building sustainable communities in one hand, and on the other, have their say in setting national and global policy priorities such as halting arms race for conducting senseless wars, and destroying natural world, to meet unlimited greed’s when millions of young people are deprived of opportunities to fulfill their dreams to be educated and creatively engaged to uplift their family from poverty and contribute positively for a peaceful world instead of being misled to be engaged in violence.
In order to address the challenges, it is essential to connect small initiatives and actions towards a worldwide liberative movement for collective empowerment and emancipation.
Expectations from the Conference
We hope that this conference will bring together progressive leaders from different faiths, scholars, researchers, representatives of women, youth movements, national and international civil society organizations. This is a space to reflect together, to share experiences and to articulate collective responses to the challenges and nurture mutually enriching solidarity towards the genuine transformation of mindset as well as existing corrupt, exploitative, discriminatory and divisive structure of governance at local, national and global levels. So that peaceful, harmonious, humane and caring societies are built for the present and future generations. In Allah’s Kingdom, there is no concept of the minority but all are equal in dignity.
