International Seminar on Politics of Identity in Globalized World: Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Belongingness

About the Seminar:

In most of the countries, politics of identity plays a significant role in shaping socio-political landscapes. Ethnicity being the fundamental aspect of identity, serves as a basis for social cohesion or conflict within diverse societies of a nation. Nationalism, on the other hand, symbolizes sentiments of loyalty and attachment to one’s nation-state, shaping political landscapes and policy agendas worldwide. Both ethnicity and nationalism shape notions of belongingness, influencing individuals’ perceptions of inclusion and exclusion within their societies. This seminar aims to delve into the complexities of identity politics in the context of the globalized world, analyzing how it amplifies and challenges traditional understandings of ethnicity, nationalism, and belongingness. It seeks to explore how a country can facilitate and promote equal space for flourishing ethnicity, and religious and cultural harmony. Furthermore, it investigates the role of political actors, institutions, and ideologies in mobilizing or mitigating identity-based tensions.

In this scenario, IIPDS, Bangkok in collaboration with Swahid Peoli Phukan College, Namti, India aims to have deliberations on multiple perspectives of the seminar by bringing together scholars, activists, policy-makers, and practitioners from diverse disciplines and regions.
